Very Mini, Mini Fairy Garden

When we moved this past summer one of the things Hailey wanted so much to do was plant a garden. Both, vegetable and flower gardens. However, I knew that we wouldn't be able to accomplish any major gardening this year. While perusing wonderful Pinterest, I came across many ideas for fairy gardens and thought, hmmm how cute! Except, I wasn't sure how to incorporate a fairy garden into our limited yard space. One day while reading other blogs (which is a problem for me because I get so caught up reading other awesome blogs that I forget, I'm suppose to be writing my own.....) I saw this idea on Top This Top That. I thought great idea, but we're currently using our firepit and don't have an extra one. But then, guess what! While cleaning and clearing the right side yard (Cutting Down The Bushes) (Cleaning Up The Bushes) and back yard (Our Tree Cutting Adventure) we dug up this!

So then, I got excited and thought instant mini fairy garden!
I spray painted it black, but didn't worry about sanding or smoothing
because it would be covered with dirt.

We purchased a pink (of course) pot and flowers.

And we used items that Hailey won
during our family 4th of July Bingo game.

Next summer we will add a few more flowers and maybe a fairy.
But for now, Hailey loves her mini fairy garden just the way it is.

Removing The Tree Stumps

Welcome to Maintenance Monday! We hope all of you had a wonderful weekend!Over the 4th of July holiday we cut down four dead pine trees (Our Tree Cutting Adventure). But, then, we needed to decide how to get rid of the stumps. We could have used a stump grinder or tried a product sold in stores for stump removal, but decided against those ideas.

We, instead, chose to cut into the stumps and burn them out.

Chris, first, tried charcoal.
However, we were left with the outside of the stumps still intact.

Chris found that the stumps burned hotter and better all the way around,
if we kept small twigs burning along with the charcoal.

After the stumps were taken care of, Brice cut the surrounding roots out.
And, finally, Chris was able to fill the empty holes with dirt
to level out that part of the yard.

The process took several weeks and we still have a few more stumps to burn out, but overall it was easy. We were able to keep an eye on the fire while working on other outside projects. So, no time was wasted. This is the way we intend to get rid of the rest of our tree stumps.

Leland's Fourth of July Events!

Welcome to Wandering Wednesday! Our next field trip took us to our hometown. We had moved about 15 years ago, so it was great to be able to enjoy the festivities and people we had not seen in a very long time. It was a beautiful day with perfect weather. We enjoyed Leland's Fourth of July events which began, on Wednesday, with a Steak Fry in the Park Dinner and a Battle of the Bands. Then on Thursday, the events included a parade, crafts and vendors, bike decorating contest, old time baseball, and many other activities. And, of course, the evening would not have been complete without Leland's spectacular fireworks!

Front Porch: Red, White, and Blue

As promised, here is our 4th of July front porch! This was the porch from our prior house. I am looking forward to decorating our new side porch and back deck in our new home. However, we are still unpacking and hoping to get to the fun stuff soon! Anyway, because the base of our decorating is neutral, transforming our everyday porch was, really, easy. All I needed to do was change out the pillows and flowers! (If you would like to see and read about our everyday porch, you will find it in our post Front Porch.)The navy blue solid and stripe pillows came from Target, and the flag pillows came from Pottery Barn. We purchased them a few years ago, so I'm not sure if they are still available. But, I have seen some great diy flag pillows on Pinterest! Hope all of you have a happy 4th of July!
