Rock Garden

Here it is! Our family rock garden is finished! When we first moved into our new home I looked at the left side of our house and among the sloping hill of overgrown bushes, in the dirt, there were rocks. (If you would like, you may read how we cleaned up the left side of our yard in Cleaning Up The Left Side Yard.) Since we would be sitting out on the side porch above the dirt and rocks, I started to envision what I could do with the space. There isn't a lot of area along the left side of our home and I didn't want to do anything extravagant, so I thought that it would be the perfect place for Our Family Inspired Rock Garden. I thought I would use the rocks that we already had and add a few perennials, so as to not have to spend money or time replacing plants every year. With one exception, I love geraniums and always add them to my plan every year. My landscaping and decorating, generally, takes the form of numbers within our family. I know what you're thinking. Weird, right? But, that's just how I think. In addition, our landscaping is done in greens, whites, and browns, and our decorating is done in neutrals. Not only do I love the way it looks, but this, also, makes it easier to change things out for the seasons and holidays.

And, now, we have this!
 

 

We have 1 fountain because we are 1 family, 5 phlox plants because we have 5 children, 3 hosta plants because we have 3 boys, 2 candy tuft plants because we have 2 girls, 7 geranium plants and 7 rocks because there are 7 in our family. We built the retaining wall 5 ft. x 25 ft. We built it to meet the old brick stone that was already there and to go along the grain of the slope. Of course, when I was planning, I was looking visually. But, when we measured the actual space, I was excited and I knew those were the numbers that we would use because we have 5 children and have been married 25 years. Sometimes, these things just work out all by themselves.
 

 

 

 

 

After, clearing, digging, and planting we decided to build a retaining wall 

to keep the dirt and water from running down the slope.
